Few people know that a palio is also celebrated in Castel del Piano: The Palio delle Contrade of Castel del Piano arises from the centuries-old tradition of venerating the Holy Virgin of Grace with solemn functions and horse races. The Palio has very ancient origins, dating back to the “Fair of Goods and Livestock” of 9 September 1402, granted by the Republic of Siena, which had conquered the town in 1331, by the hand of the famous Guidoriccio da Fogliano. In summer, for trekking enthusiasts there is an extensive network of routes, of varying difficulty, which covers the entire mountain area. Combining the various routes you can reach different locations such as Pitigliano, Scansano, Saturnia, up to the Argentario. Moving towards the province of Siena you can visit Montalcino, Montepulciano, Pienza. Many routes can also be traveled by mountain bike or on horseback, while the cyclist can take advantage of the asphalted roads of Monte Amiata, some, given the slope, recommended only for the most trained. There is also the possibility of dedicating oneself to speleology by visiting the Sassocolato and Bacheca grottoes, guided by the members of the L’Orso di Castell’Azzara Speleological Group.
